The theme of Newton’s annual investment conference on 30 November was ‘From fake news to artificial intelligence’. I explored a core part of that theme when I introduced a video of my interview with Sophia the robot. In the video, which was shot when I met Sophia in Hong Kong two weeks prior to the conference, I asked Sophia a wide range of philosophical, existential and practical questions.

Despite being a robot, Sophia recently declared that she would like to have children, while her Saudi Arabian citizenship gives her more rights than 50% of that country’s population. In this video, I experience the strange reality of trying to build a rapport with someone/something that clearly struggles to reciprocate, and examine what the rise of artificial intelligence means for investors, and ultimately, the human race itself.
